Well, this is a more common scenario than you might imagine. Many times I’ve had conversations with guests before they’re on the program. They’ll say something like, “Well, the police need to go talk to John. He knows what happened. I know he does. Police need to talk to him.”
This would be a scenario where John, even if he knows the truth, has no motivation to say it.
My response, “And what are the police supposed to do when they talk to John and he denies knowing anything? Then what?”
And there’s the rub. This isn’t North Korea. This isn’t certain parts of China. This isn’t other places where torturing suspects might be an acceptable way to get information from them.
Here, if people don’t want to talk, they don’t have to talk. If they want to lie, they can lie. If they want to tell the truth, they can do that too. But still, no physical or mental force can be used to make them talk. And we can’t forget about the lawyers.
What I’m essentially saying to the guests with my response is..
